Geostationary (GEO) satellites provide reliable, long-range connectivity for marine vessels by staying fixed over the same spot on Earth. However, the distance from Earth leads to higher latency compared to LEO or MEO satellites. Despite this, GEO-based VSAT systems have a wide coverage area and are cost-effective for many maritime users. For missions requiring more responsive, lower-latency communication, LEO or MEO systems might be better, but GEO still leads in terms of global availability and infrastructure.
