Under the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention, ships are required to have at least one magnetic compass and one spare. These compasses must be correctly installed, fully functional, and maintained. They must also have proper deviation cards and be readable from the helm. SOLAS further mandates compass repeaters for vessels over certain tonnage. Regular inspection and servicing are part of SOLAS compliance checks.
