The Directorate General (DG) of Shipping, India mandates that every seagoing vessel be equipped with a magnetic compass approved by a recognized authority. The compass must be properly calibrated and installed in a suitable location, such as a binnacle on the bridge. It should be readable from the steering position and regularly maintained. DG Shipping also requires a valid deviation card issued by a certified compass adjuster. Non-compliance can result in survey failure or voyage detention.
