BNWAS

The Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) is a critical safety mechanism mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 19, ensuring the alertness of the Officer of the Watch (OOW) to prevent accidents caused by fatigue or incapacitation. The system operates through a structured sequence of alerts, starting with a dormant period where the OOW must reset the system manually or through motion detection. If no reset occurs, a pre-warning visual alert is triggered on the bridge, followed by an audible bridge alarm if there is still no response. Further escalation extends the alarm to the Captain’s cabin and other crew areas, prompting immediate intervention. A complete BNWAS setup includes a control unit, reset buttons, motion sensors (optional), audible and visual alarms, and external alarm panels placed in key locations. The system is mandatory for all passenger ships and cargo vessels over 150 GT and must operate at sea unless otherwise exempted.
