A compass deviation survey determines the amount of magnetic deviation in a compass under shipboard conditions. Conducted by qualified compass adjusters, the survey includes multiple heading checks and is often followed by a deviation card. In India, these surveys are done before sea trials or after structural modifications to a vessel.
